A commissioned music video by Neana for his track Indigo on his released album in late September, 2020.

At the beginning of Jo’s exploration into machine learning, she wanted to understand what it means for machine learning as a tool for creation. Hence, this video was primarily a visual exploration of coupling visuals created by the human and raw machine-produced moving images (what are called “latent walks”) that move in flux from one image to the next. This was the first step taken outside of creating static visuals through archiGAN, a joint project with Emily May.

During this process, Jo aimed to use what she calls the “base” images (raw output of machine learning) as content that can be transformed even further. This desire to transform GAN-produced images comes as a reaction to the inundation of GAN-produced images being displayed online, as these images can be recognized by the visual language produced by how the algorithm learns from images.

Indigo by Neana was also an exploration in finding Jo’s visual language and questions she wants to investigate further in her practice, trying her hand in not only emerging technology but also the visual language of digital artists at that time.
