COUNTERPLACE+, 2021
an immersive, interactive work by Jo Ho
-
COUNTERPLACE+ is a virtual intervention of a space that overlays directly on its physical counterpart as a direct response to the theme of the exhibit: Future Spaces.
By using the capabilities of digital technology to create transformations in the representations of physical objects, COUNTERPLACE+ plays with the meaning of digital objects and spaces by testing the boundaries beyond the constraints of parameters of the physical world.
Exhibited at UltraSuperNew Gallery for their collaboration with Mischief Makers on the Exhibit FUTURE SPACE, the entire gallery was modeled and overlaid at a 1 to 1 scale on top of the actual physical space. The room where counterpalce-- (sub-title of work for a sub-space) solely resides is in the virtual back space of the gallery.
Visitors are required to put on the headset to enter the space where Jo’s machine-learning motion graphics coat the space of the virtual room.
This project was another one of Jo’s explorations in delving within the space of the digital, but creating more corporeal, guttural forms than one of techno-utopic futures.
