Exquisite Monster, 2022
by Jo Ho, Thong Pei Qin, and Pat Toh

Interactive performance with various props and digital technology
Duration: 75 minutes

  • Exquisite Monster was a reflexive, cross-disciplinary devising process that used themes of conception and femaleness inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The project by this Singaporean collective was a process-driven devising method that began with the artists’ reflection on their own practice as creators which then expanded to include the invited audience’s experiences. Jo, Pat, and Pei Qin were interested in the relationship between creator and creation across multiple and diverse perspectives.

By channeling bodies and digital technology as mediums for storytelling, the artists transformed 136 Goethe Lab into an incubation space to destabilize the notion that a singular body is a unitary model that excludes all others in its vision.

Exquisite Monster took the form of a mixed-format participatory presentation in an open studio encompassing elements of documentary-making, art performance, and interviews to expose the anatomy of making.
